Steaming is not a new practice and its roots reach out to many places in the world with different names and different uses of local herbs.
In Latin America, pelvic steams are called bajos and employed by traditional midwives to alleviate reproductive issues and provide postpartum support to women. In Africa, an ethnographic study was published comparing vaginal practices, including steaming, across the continent. In said study, the authors describe how the vagina is considered a magically potent and sensitive place in Zulu culture. In Korea, steam-baths are known as chai-yok and include the use of Japanese mugwort, which is both spiritually protective and has successfully been used to heal reproductive issues.
Steaming has become increasingly popular, making its way into the mainstream. But what's the hype?

HOW DOES IT WORK
Herbal steam baths greatly improve circulation to the pelvis, which can be a major underlying cause for pain and imbalance in reproductive organs and the pelvic bowl. Additionally, the vaginal mucosa is extremely absorbent - this means that the beneficial volatile oils of the herbs (ie what you smell when you smell the aroma of a plant) are easily brought into the bloodstream, along with their medicinal properties. Lastly, steam is much lighter and less dense than water, and so it travels further up your vagina, possibly even reaching your uterus, though this is a topic of debate.
